(Draft) Feeder Roller Axel Construction (Draft)

This step will be the construction of the feeder roller axel.

Warning: Working with tools can be dangerous, so always use caution. I am familiar with working with these tools, and cannot guarantee that the techniques I use will necessarily be safe for you to use. I am including these photos and techniques to help you plan out your project, and to provide some guidance.

This will involve cutting an axel, and mounting three sanding tubes onto four feed shaft collars.

The instructions for this step can be found in the Piranha Roller Video between 22:28 to 26:30 minutes within the video.

  1. Cut (at least) one of the axels in half.

    1. Mark the halfway point

      Using a permanent marker, make a mark at 7-7/8 inches from each end. Note: The photo shows the marks measured from both ends.

    2. Prepare to cut the hardened steel rod.

      There may be other ways to cut the hardened steel axel, but based upon what I read, using a cut-off wheel on an angle grinder seems the best way to do it. I considered using my compound mitre saw with a carbide blade, but I didn't want to ruin my existing carbide blade from overheating, and I knew my angle grinder with a cord would be strong enough.

      I secured the axel between two saw horses, and put my 4-1/2 inch metal cut-off blade (securely) on my angle grinder. I found that clamping the axel between onto two saw horses was sufficient. I was concerned that they might loosen, but they turned out to be secure.

    3. Start cutting the rod with an angle grinder.

      Cut through the axel with the angle grinder cutter blade. Note: the metal gets hot, so I stopped regularly, to let it cool some.

    4. Stop when axel pinches the blade.

      When the axel starts pinching the blade, stop cutting.

      Bend the blade at the cut, then finish the cut.

    5. Remove the burrs from axel where it was cut.

      I used my angle grinder with a grinder attachment to remove the sharp edges from the cut. If I had a bench grinder, I would have used that for a more uniform grind.
